When citizens of the developed world think about the word “epidemic”, they will likely conjure dramatic images of a drug-resistant, largely uncontrollable disease. In reality, however, many of the most deadly epidemics that exist in the world are highly preventable, and continue to survive solely because cures are inaccessible to the less privileged. Malaria is one of those epidemics; despite being almost totally eliminated in the developed world, it continues to kill nearly one million people every year (WHO 2008), with the majority of those residing in the Global South.
The Mosquitoes Suck Tour (MST) is a campaign being organized by SoChange that travels to high schools across Ontario, raising malaria awareness and funds to purchase bed nets, one of the most effective preventative measures in the fight against the disease. The MST operates in collaboration with Spread the Net (STN), a fundraising campaign spearheaded by comedian Rick Mercer and philanthropist Belinda Stronach. Each presentation consists of a professional comedian and magician, as well as a SoChange speaker who performs a short keynote talk on the topic of malaria.
